Work done: By electric field or external force?

When attempting to determine whether the work was done by the field or an outside force you must determine whether or not the particle gained or lost electrical potential energy. In this case the particle moved in a direction that is closer to parallel the direction of the field than it is to anti-parallel. This means that it lost potential energy and thus the work was done by the field.
